The trouble is that thinset generally requires a textured surface to bond at.

2 install and nail backerboard over the vinyl then install tile.
However if you can t remove the old surface or otherwise decide to install over it lay a backer board with thin set over the old surface to serve as your new subfloor material.
Installing ceramic tile over vinyl or linoleum surfaces can be more complicated than expected and probably should be avoided whenever possible.
Using the tavy thin skin system home owners are now able to lay ceramic tile over surfaces that would have never before been possible.
This isn t possible with every flooring material but it s often possible to install ceramic porcelain or stone tile over resilient flooring including standard sheet vinyl vinyl tile or linoleum.

When installing new stone ceramic or porcelain tiles over a vinyl tile subfloor thinset is definitely the way to go.
So where feasible it makes sense to install the new flooring directly over the old without removing the old flooring.
Installing over existing vinyl.
The plan is to install 12 12 ceramic tile.
1 remove both layers of vinyl before tile install.
3 spread a thin layer of concrete over the vinyl and install tile.
If the grout lines in the ceramic tile are deep you ll see and feel them under sheet flooring and if you choose to install preglued vinyl tiles they won t stick.
